“To walk without a destination is to allow oneself to slip through the cracks of reality, into a parallel world. There you can come across things and meanings that can only be found without actually looking.”
Walks IN THE LAND OF TURNING LUCK
2014 – 2016, a photographic series
Walks are rebuilt sceneries from various walks to nowhere in particular.
The works were made using photographs from the artist’s walks during artist in residence periods and travels in Scotland, Italy and Finland. For Laura Konttinen, walking is a vessel for artistic thinking. It is an immediate medium for cartography. The end goal is not so much to make sense of the surroundings but rather to understand the experience. Walking in a foreign place is falling through the cracks of reality. The series drew inspiration from Rebecca Solnit’s book A Field Guide to Getting Lost.
The photographs were cut-up and arranged into 3-dimensional collages, to be photographed with a carefully considered depth of field.
The works are available in sizes 50 x 40 cm and 70 x 56 cm, edition of 5. The works have been exhibited as a companion series to “Changeling Creeps into the Garden”.
